The brief:

Veltox was invited to attend a site inspection in the Cheshire East area following reports of persistent external rat activity. The site, an active recycling warehouse handling shredded materials against concrete retaining walls, had developed significant signs of colony behaviour — extensive burrow systems within wall voids, surface tracking along perimeter routes, and high levels of nesting activity concentrated behind waste bays and storage areas.

The Challenge:

Traditional control measures had failed to make long-term impact. The rats were well established, using structural voids as harbourage. Given the limitations of the site, the objective was to vastly reduce the through environmental correction and proofing.

The Investigation

Our inspection confirmed:

• Extensive burrow networks beneath shrub lines and fencing.

• Inconsistent bait placement from previous treatments.

• Readily available food sources and poor waste management practices.

• Gaps beneath perimeter structures offering continuous shelter.

Rather than immediately rebait, Veltox applied our trace-to-source and conquer methodology:

• Mapping runs and feeding patterns.

• Identifying active versus dormant burrows.

• Assessing environmental attractants (water, feed, waste, shelter).

 

Our Strategy

Our approach would be a staged control and prevention plan, designed to dismantle the colony by exploiting rodent behaviour and the site’s physical layout rather than relying on repeated baiting.
All control measures would be proportionate, targeted, and risk-assessed, ensuring humane and sustainable results within an active industrial setting.

1. Phase 1 – Rapid Knockdown
We would begin with targeted baiting at active runs and burrows to collapse the core population quickly and humanely.
Rodent colonies, when allowed to thrive, create extensive networks with a clear social structure — dominant older males occupy central nesting zones, while younger rats occupy outer areas.
By understanding this behaviour, we would target key areas of colony activity first, ensuring rapid reduction with minimal toxicant use.

At this site, nesting within the concrete wall structure was so advanced that live collection could have been possible — a clear sign of long-term habitation.

2. Phase 2 – Habitat Manipulation
We would focus on altering rodent movement patterns within the warehouse environment.
By sealing one end of the infested wall section, we would guide rodents through controlled pathways to ensure safe, predictable bait uptake.
This behavioural control limits spread and increases efficiency of treatment.

3. Phase 3 – Proofing & Containment
Full proofing may not be feasible in an active recycling warehouse, but selective sealing would restrict rodent access and create defined containment zones.
This approach allows for safer, more measurable follow-up control and monitoring.

4. Phase 4 – Monitoring & Verification
After control, non-toxic monitoring blocks would verify that activity has ceased.
Digital reporting through Veltox’s platform would provide full transparency on bait use, photographs, and follow-up recommendations.
